A Little Tree-some

Some folks like shooting people, especially children or the very old, some stalk animals, wild or domesticated, some camp out by sunrises and sunsets, some stick with mountains and valleys, some swear by night scenes, some feast on foods. Me I have a thing for trees. When travelling by road, trees invariably catch my eye. Their outlines and silhouettes, and the more crooked and scraggier, the more interesting they look to me.

Which explains these pictures. I love photographing trees. And flowers. But trees win by a slightly wider margin. Especially in the leafless, stripped-to-the-bone stages. No heavy leaf-laden trees with lush green glossy foliage for me. I like them bleak, stark, denuded, desolate, skeletal, clawed and taloned, reaching out to the skies with defiant dignity.

  7. interesting. never really paid much attention to tree per se. but this post made me think and, perhaps, i'll now see trees in a different light. also reminded me of my son (when he was small) who always used to say "the trees!" when asked what he missed most of places we have stayed in for some time. whether it was in their denuded or clothed forms, i dont know :)

  8. To a little boy, trees probably mean just one thing - playthings! He probably usually was up a tree when he was a kid. I don't climb trees though, never could, though my younger sister was like a little monkey with trees. I have a distinct childhood memory of my older sister calling her for tea one day saying, "Lo chhuk vat rawh, trawi trawi a che" and it turned out the person on the guava tree was actually my mum :D

  10. Hmm. You should visit SoCal. Plenty of trees that meet your specs although i couldn't help but speculate how Freud might spin your interesting choice of subjects. A barren and gnarly id reaching out from a subconsciously...! Is that Pu lianhmingthanga's house backdropped in the fourth one?

  12. Philo, it did strike me that my choice of subject might reflect something in me but I hadn't quite gotten to that kind of Freudian speculation yet :)) "a barren and gnarly id reaching out from a subconscious..." Sounds kind of ominous, brrrrr. Bingo, those are Pu Lianhmingthanga's twin domes. Kind of interesting architecture, right? I heard he commissioned Pu Tlangrokhuma to paint a huge mural on his bedroom wall too. Are you related to the family btw?

  19. Travelling half a world away to shoot trees sounds kind of blow away extravagant but I can always dream :)
