Earlier today I was taking down the Christmas trimmings and wrapping up the ornaments in newspapers. The papers were mostly recent Times of India issues, and a lot of them carried pictures of high-end cell phones, iphones 4 and 5 etc. I didn't have time to look at any of the small print but one headline caught my eye, the details of which I had carefully read days before. "Gang-rape victim's fight will not go in vain: Sonia Gandhi" It struck me that by year end when it's time to deck the house up for Christmas and we unwrap the baubles once again, we will know for sure. Time will tell.

Sometimes it's scary that we forget what we once felt so strongly about, unless it directly involves us. With this issue too, I have a feeling most of us will simply forget all about the incident, till something similar happens again :(
ReplyDeleteWell, this time I think a step in the right direction might get fought out but you could also be right. It's so hard bringing in any real changes and we do have such short memories. That's why I decided to write this here instead of on Fb because it'll be easier to track it down here later :)
DeleteIf anything I think it will get worse due to massive skewing of the male to female ratio. The attitude of men has not changed much since way back when I was a student in Delhi University. If anything, it has gotten worse.
ReplyDeleteMore and more sexually repressed men with bad attitude chasing fewer and fewer girls is surely a recipe for disaster. India will continue to be a country that is unfriendly to women.
You're probably right. This whole thing isn't something that can be solved overnight, it's just way too ingrained, too deep-rooted. But the powers that be could use this case as a catalyst - to lay down some speed breakers, to at least frighten off rapist-wannabes with a really heavy deterrent.
