With the angels..

Totie passed away this afternoon. He was 13. He was named indirectly after Dodie, the man Princess Diana died with, and who were both in the news at the time. My sister thought the name Dodie was just so cute and begged to name the puppy with it but I said no, so we settled on Totie. 13 years is a long time especially for dogs. I read somewhere that 1 human year equals 7 for a dog so that would mean Totie was 91. While he did have filmy eyes, decaying teeth, incontinence, and not too sharp hearing, our 5 year Koorie kept him lively, dragging him to play when he would have probably preferred to sleep quietly. Totie sometimes snapped back impatiently but most times, he let Koorie tease him around, which inadvertently helped him get some good exercise.

As my sister and I have been leafing through old photographs of our many dogs, we're having problems remembering who was born when, whose mother was who, whose sibling was who and so on. We're also realising that 13 years is also a long, long time for human beings.

  1. Truly and deeply sorry for your loss.. Ni Mapuii texted me about it and I've also offered her my condolences. One of our pups died a few years back and till today I cannot bear look at his pics because of the hurt.. so I understand what you're going through and empathize with you and Ni Mapuii and Ni Pegs... U know.. the first thing that comes to my mind when I think about the three of you is a pack of cute little dogs barking at us on the 'rare' occasions that we come and visit (sorry for this too.. kan lo leng tep). Oi your blog's literally about to make me cry.. Anyhoo.. I genuinely consider dogs to be the most perfect of God's creations coz there isn't anything or anyone as loving and as loyal and pure and so I am positive that Totie is with the angels and absolutely refuse to believe otherwise... Kan lo ral ang che u.. soon :D

  2. We know how much it means to lose a pet. They touch our lives in such a unique manner.. My prayers for Totie.. Hope you and your sister will slowly get used to being around without him, though it might be very tough, i know.. Even Koorie will miss him so..

  3. Wow, 13 years. I can only imagine how losing him must have hurt, considering how long he's been with you. Ive never formed a particular attachment to a pet because they never stay long for one reason or the other, and I think thats my loss. Friends in the know tell me that the unconditional love shown by dogs is unsurpassable and that losing them is no different from losing a human friend.
My condolences and hey, all dogs go to Heaven too :)

  4. my condolences...we sometimes believe they'll stay forever, sharing the 70+ life that we undeservedly enjoy but the shocking realization that their life span is so much shorter always comes when after only a decade, they just stop breathing. If only they can be around longer...:(

  5. Deeply appreciate the sympathy and empathy, everyone. We've had dogs constantly since 1984, all descended from a little Chihuahua-type named Cindy, and though we've loved and lost more than we care to count, every passing leaves us numb. Thank you again for your condolences.

  6. Sad. The passing away of pets is heartbreaking. But I'm sure you will cherish all the happy memories you had with him.

  8. Thank you, ambs and diary. We still have Boom Boom who's a year older, and the last of Cindy's lineage and already it makes us sad that he'll have to leave us one day too.

They [dogs] never talk about themselves but listen to you while you talk about yourself, and keep up an appearance of being interested in the conversation.
